What to do in a time of layoffs?

Many people in Switzerland are facing layoffs at the moment. What can YOU do right now to find a new role in these challenging times?

I know the job market is extremely tough at the moment. As a Career Transition and Job Search Coach, I am hearing of layoffs daily and the impact it has on my clients. Layoffs bring uncertainty and shake confidence. BUT they don’t define you-or your future.

When it feels overwhelming, focus on what’s in your control. Here’s how you can take the reins:

1. Update your LinkedIn profile & CV

Use LinkedIn to tell your story in a clear, compelling way. Show your skills, achievements, and the value you bring to employers. A polished profile attracts opportunities from recruiters and hiring managers. Be visible. Same with your CV, list your achievements and the value you bring to the role.

2. Build your network.

Most jobs in Switzerland come through referrals, not listings. Reach out to industry contacts. Attend events. Share your expertise in conversations. Relationships matter. Be visible and give back in the networking. Tap into your existing network - professional and social. Think of volunteering opportunities in associations which could give you access to a wider network of opportunities in your field. Your network is your net worth! I always say that networking is like planting seeds, and you need to water them for those relationships to grow. Get planting!

3. Update your skills.

Take courses or earn certifications related to your field. Staying relevant sets you apart-and shows employers your drive to grow. Upskill by focusing on AI and digital transformation.

4. Learn the local language of your Canton; even modest proficiency helps open the doors to roles not purely English.

5. Interview strategy.

Practice interview responses. Use AI to formulate questions that could be asked based on the job description. Prepare for interviews. Without practice and preparation, you could lose out on a great opportunity.

A structured approach makes all the difference. Align your efforts with your goals, target growth sectors, companies that would hire someone like you, and apply for roles where your skills and expertise are required - right now, the market is so tough that trying to pivot into a new career without the experience is very challenging.

A layoff may end your current role, but it doesn’t erase your talent or who you are. You can rebuild, adapt, and thrive - whether it be to find a new role or even start your own business.

If you’re uncertain about your next step, reach out to me. I’d love to support you in crafting a strategy that opens new doors.

Warm regards
