Why Your Location on LinkedIn Matters for Job Opportunities

As a job search coach and past recruiter, a common LinkedIn mistake I see is leaving your location blank or too broad (e.g., just listing your country). While it may seem like a small detail, specifying your city or metro area can significantly impact your job search.

Here’s why:

✅ Recruiters search by location – Many recruiters filter candidates on LinkedIn based on city or region within a certain radius. If you don’t list one, you might not even show up in searches for roles in that area, even if you’re the perfect fit! 😳

✅ Hybrid & remote roles still have location preferences – Even in a remote-first world, many companies prioritize candidates within a certain region for time zones, occasional in-office needs, or tax compliance.

✅ It signals your job market availability – Clearly stating your city (or the area you’re open to relocating to) helps hiring managers understand where you are flexible to work or relocate too. In your ‘Open to Work for Recruiters’ section please list the towns you are interested in i.e. Zurich, Zug, Basel etc

Quick Fix:

Go to your LinkedIn profile, click the “pencil” icon on your intro section, and update your location to your current canton / city. If you’re open to relocation, consider adding that in your “Open to Work for Recruiters section”
